In Loving Memory of Signature Poster Pet Rudy

logobannerGone, But Not Forgotten

Pets Uniting People Society would like to take a moment to reminisce about those pets that went to Rainbow Bridge in 2013. Ones gone, but not forgotten. One was our signature poster pet Rudy (aka Baxter). When we learned of his passing, it was a shock as his passing was an unexpected one for he was only about 3 or 4 years old.

When I first met Rudy, it was in the parking lot of the A T & T phone store. He was in the back seat of a mid-size sedan, tied to the front head rest. When I entered the store, there was a couple signing up for a new cell phone. I asked the young man if that was his pit bull out in the car and he said, “Yes, mam!” He then proceeded to tell me how he acquired the young dog. “Our front door was open one morning; he ran in and jumped right into my lap!” I told him how handsome the pit bull was and if he decided he couldn’t keep him to call me. I gave him my PUPS’ card.

About two weeks later, I received an early morning call from this young man asking if I was the lady he met at the phone store. Immediately I recognized the young man’s voice as he had a southern accent and was very polite. He said with his voice breaking, “Mam, I can’t keep him.” I asked, “Where do you live?” I rushed right over.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After I picked him up, my new friend and I rode around town in my car, my new found friend licking my face all the while. We had quite a long ride as I had to think through where I was going to take him to be safe. The guy did tell me his name and it was “Felon”, like he was a criminal! Well, I had to change that! He went unnamed for the first day or two. Our first stop was to the veterinarian’s office to get him vaccinated so he could be placed into a local kennel. When the veterinarian asked me how long I had him…I answered quickly, “About an hour!” He laughed and told me he was a just a young pup, but I think he was just a small pit bull. He never did get very big. This little pit bull was the first “case” PUPS admitted into its program. It was definitely an emergency. Even though PUPS’s purpose is not a rescue, we do “take in” animals in extreme situations. After the first full day at a local kennel, the kennel workers informed me that he didn’t bark, but howled.

This is Rudy as he was when PUPS’ Director rescued him. He was adopted in 2010 and renamed, but he will always be Rudy to us here at PUPS.

As a pet sitter and animal lover, I saw no reason why this dog should have been homeless. From the short time I was around Rudy, he didn’t deserve what he was getting out of life. I tagged him with the name Rudy because this name told his story. He was a lover like Rudolph Valentino, a red-nosed pit bull, similar traits of the movie character ‘Rudy’, the small athlete with a huge heart, and made sounds like that Crooner Rudy Vallee (well, maybe just a little). That’s Rudy! Rudy got a home right before Christmas 2010. Got word that Rudy passed away a few months ago, not is all known about the details. I think I’m still in shock.

As long as I am PUPS’ director, he will continue to be our signature poster dog…I love you, Rudy, Rest in Peace, my dear friend!

Rainbow Bridge…Just this side of heaven is a place called RainbowBridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to RainbowBridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAll the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those that were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross RainbowBridge together….
